Set the background color or graphic.

You can specify the background for When in Writer: paragraphs, pages, headers, footers, text frames, tables, table cells, sections, and indexes.When in Calc: cells and pages.

Choose Format - Paragraph - Background tab

Choose Format - Character - Background tab

Choose Format - Image - Background tab

Choose Format - Frame and Object - Properties - Area tab

Choose Format - Page - Background tab

Choose Format - Page - Header - More button

Choose Format - Page - Footer - More button

Choose View - Styles and Formatting - open context menu of an entry and choose Modify/New - Background tab

Choose Insert/Edit - Section - Background tab

When in Calc: Choose Format - Cells - Background tab

Defining Graphics or Colors in the Background of Pages (Watermark)


Select the type of background that you want to apply.

Using a Color as a Background

Color Background

Click the color that you want to use as a background. To remove a background color, click No Fill.

Highlight Color
Background Color

Applies the current highlight color to the background of a text selection. If no text is selected, click the Highlight Color icon, select the text that you want to highlight, and then click the Highlight Color icon again. To change the highlight color, click the arrow next to the Highlight Color icon, and then click the color that you want.

Preview Field

Displays a preview of the current selection.

When in Writer: For

When in Writer: Select the area that you want to apply the background color to. For example, when you define the background color for a table, you can choose to apply it to the table, the active cell, the row, or the column.

When in Writer:

Note.png This option is only available when you edit the background of a table or a paragraph style.

Using a Graphic as a Background


Contains information about the graphic file.

Display field

Shows the path for the graphic file.


Links to or embeds the graphic file in the current file.


Displays or hides a preview of the selected graphic.


Locate the graphic file that you want to use as a background, and then click Open.


Specify the way that you want to display the background graphic.


Select this option, and then click a location in the position grid.


Stretches the graphic to fill the entire background of the selected object.


Repeats the graphic so that it covers the entire background of the selected object.

Preview Field

Displays a preview of the current selection.
